I was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1949 Following schooling at the John Neilson Institution in Paisley I studied Western European literature in Portugal (Coimbra) before training as a tax accountant. After a spell working with offshore trust administration I spent two years at Birmingham completing a PhD thesis on Fernando Pessoa and working as a freelance presenter/producer for BBC Radio.
